Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Gary W. Peterson has been a member of the Florida State University faculty since 1972. He is now retired from the faculty and holds the rank of professor emeritus. While a member of the FSU faculty until 2007, he was a full professor in the College of Education and coordinator of the program, Psychological Services in Education from 1996 through 2006. He was also the Clinical Training Director of the Combined Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology during the same time period. He has also served as a senior research associate since 1989 and continues to serve as a senior research associate emeritus in the Center for the Study of Technology in Counseling and Career Development. He is a licensed Psychologist in Florida (PSY 0002505). From 1972 through 1988, Dr. Peterson held the position of Research Associate in the Center for Educational Technology, and from 1988 through 1994, he served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in the College of Education. Prior to coming to Florida State University, he was a counselor in the counseling center at UNC-Charlotte, 1966-68, and a senior counselor in the counseling center at Duke University 19970-72.

Dr. Peterson’s educational history includes a B.A. degree in Biology from Humboldt State University in California, 1962, an M.A degree in Guidance from Duke University, 1967, and a Ph.D degree in Counseling from Duke University, 1970. He served in the Peace Corps, Nigeria as a science and math teacher from 1963 through 1965. He took a sabbatical leave in 1995 as a visiting scholar in the School of Education, Stanford University.

Within the Psychological Services in Education Program, he teaches courses in personality assessment, research methods, consultation and organizational development, as well as conducting practica in the Career Center and supervising MS/EdS interns. He has directed 23 doctoral dissertations. He also serves on a variety of college, university, and state policy committees, including chair of the University Admission Committee and chair of the Standing Committee on Student Achievement of the Articulation Coordinating Committee, Florida Department of Education.

During his career at Florida State University he has published over 40 journal articles in areas of curriculum development, evaluation and accountability in education and human services, career problem solving and decision making, personality measurement and assessment, and career assessment. He has co-authored two books with colleagues James P. Sampson, Robert Reardon, and Janet Lenz, Career Development and Services: A Cognitive Approach, and Career Development and Planning: A Comprehensive Approach and has written 10 book chapters. He has also co-authored the development of the Family Role Behavior Inventory and the Career Thoughts Inventory. Dr. Peterson has served as a Principal Investigator or Co- Principal Investigator of 22 state and federal contracts totaling $982,000. His present research interests include cognitive processes in career problem solving and decision making and the application of chaos theory to career development and services in an information society. He maintains active membership in APA and NCDA and has served as chair of the Career Development SIG, AERA, 1988 - 1992 and 2002-2006.
