Sampson, Jr., Ph.D. http://www.career.fsu.edu/techcenter/ Jim Sampson is currently a Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and Learning Systems at Florida State University, where he has taught courses in career development and computer applications in counseling since 1982. Since 1986 he has served as Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Technology in Counseling and Career Development, a research center established at FSU to improve the design and use of computer applications in counseling and guidance. He writes and speaks on the appropriate use of computer technology in counseling and on the use of cognitive strategies in the improvement of career counseling and guidance services. In addition to the United States, he has presented or consulted in Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Romania, Scotland, Sweden, and Turkey. Along with Gary Peterson and Robert Reardon, he is an author of the 1991 book entitled "Career Development and Services: A Cognitive Approach." As part of his efforts to translate theory into practice, he is an author of the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) along with Gary Peterson, Janet Lenz, Robert Reardon, and Denise Saunders. The CTI includes an instrument and an intervention workbook to measure and alter negative thinking that impedes career decision making. Along with Robert Reardon, Janet Lenz, and Gary Peterson he is an author of the 2000 book entitled "Career Development and Planning: A Cognitive Approach. His most recent book with Robert Reardon, Gary Peterson, and Janet Lenz is entitled "Career Counseling and Services: A Cognitive Information Processing Approach” (2004). Jim has had a long-term interest in standards of practice and ethical codes related to the design and use of computer applications in counseling. He has authored elements of the "Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice" of the American Counseling Association, the "Handbook of Standards for the Operation of Computer-Based Career Information Systems" of the Association of Computer-Based Systems for Career Information, the "Code of Ethics," “The Practice of Internet Counseling,” and the "Standards for the Ethical Practice of Webcounseling" of the National Board for Certified Counselors, the "Career Counseling Competencies," the "Ethical Standards," and the "Guidelines for the Use of the Internet for Provision of Career Information and Planning Services" of the National Career Development Association. In 1990 he received the National Career Development Association Merit Award. In 1995 he received the National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee Recognition Award. Along with Robert Reardon he received the 1996 American Counseling Association Ralph Berdie Memorial Research Award. In 1997 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Computer-Based Systems for Career Information. In 1998 he received the President’s Award from the National Career Development Association. Along with Robert Reardon he received the 1999 American Counseling Association Extended Research Award. In 2001 he received the Eminent Career award from the National Career Development Association. Jim was elected as an Overseas Fellow at the National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling in Cambridge, United Kingdom (1997 to the present). He was appointed as a Visiting Professor at the University of Joensuu in Finland (1999), at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom (2001 to the present), and at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland (2002 to the present). Prior to joining the faculty at Florida State University, he was a Senior Counselor and the Coordinator of the Career Planning Center at the Student Counseling and Career Planning Center, Georgia Institute of Technology. Jim received his Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Florida in 1977. He is a National Certified Counselor (No. 3999), a National Certified Career Counselor (No. 3999), and a Licensed Psychologist in Florida (No. PY0003013). |
