Leadership Experiences

The following experiences led to development of Leadership skills:

Jobs / Internships

Center for the Study of Values, Tallahassee, FL; Program Coordinator;
August 2001 - May 2003

Responsibilities: Conduct research on values and ethics in higher education; coordinate the 12th and 13th Annual Institute on College Student Values at Florida State University; design advertisements for the Center and Institute to appear in higher education publications such as The Chronicle, The Presidency, and NASPA; direct planning committee meetings; maintain Institute website; manage financial statements; and assist in special projects.

The months prior to the Institute on College Values are very work intense. As the Program Coordinator I provide leadership to the staff and planning committee as I direct and assign tasks to everyone so that I make use of everyone's time, talents and skills.

Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL; Instructor;
January 2002 - May 2003

Responsibilities: Completely responsible for instruction and teaching of 42 students in one section of Introduction to Education, a course designed for undergraduate students (primarily sophomores and juniors – some freshman and seniors) who are considering teaching as a profession; Developing new weekly materials to assist students in learning the assigned content; Utilizing Blackboard™ course management software into Introduction to Education; Providing academic advisement and mentored students; Actively participated in professional organizations such as the Institute on Service Learning in Teacher Education and presenting at NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Association) Region III in Gainesville, FL; Maintaining an awareness of current developments in education through journals and newspapers.

While teaching I have had the opportunity to pilot a service-learning project with my students at Florida State University Schools. Service-Learning integrates curriculum and service so that students strengthen their understanding of new knowledge while simultaneously addressing a community need. Due to the success of the pilot, service-learning has been integrated into all ten sections of this course with more than 300 students. I have also co-authored a paper on integrating service learning into a teacher preparatory program. I plan to continue developing my skills in testing new teaching strategies and continue to participate in the development and enhancement of educational programs.

SUNY Brockport, Brockport, NY; Admissions Advisor;
June 2000 - July 2001

Responsibilities: Coordinated international student admissions application review and processes; organized campus open houses consisting of 500 prospective students and parents; conducted interviews of admission candidates and evaluated applicant credentials; provided campus tours, formal presentations and information sessions about SUNY Brockport and the application process; coordinated and assisted with a variety of campus programs and special events for prospective students and their families; assisted the operations staff with workload at peak periods; planned, developed, implemented, coordinated, and evaluated assigned programs and activities to formulate and present recommendations; and worked cooperatively and sensitively in a team environment and with individuals from varying backgrounds.

In recent years, SUNY Brockport experienced a serious decline in its international admissions. As coordinator of international admissions, I refined the admissions process into its current form. I co-founded an international student advisory board, which enhanced communications between the offices of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Services. As a result of my efforts, international recruitment experienced an eighty-five percent increase.
