Career Portfolio Tips

  • Showcase your objectives, goals, and accomplishments in the Profile section, and make sure the contents of your Career Portfolio relate back to that information.
  • Have your resume critiqued at the Career Center before uploading it to your Career Portfolio.
  • Tailor your experience entries to each specific skill in the Skills Matrix. Do not just copy and paste one standard description of the experience.
  • Use a variety of experiences to highlight your skills – do not just reply on your coursework.
  • Reflect only on the skills you have actually acquired. Do not misrepresent yourself.
  • Be specific yet concise in describing your activities and roles at within your various experiences. Referred users may not have a lot of time to read lengthy descriptions.
  • Obtain permission from your References prior to including their contact information in your Career Portfolio.
  • Select Artifacts that reflect goals and/or objectives stated in your Profile. 
  • Describe your artifacts! Provide a description that explains how your work supports the acquisition of the skills outlined in your Career Portfolio.
  • Customize your Career Portfolio for each referred user. You want to determine what is most important to show a particular audience. (You can have unlimited versions of your Career Portfolio that you can cater to specific viewers).
  • Proof your Career Portfolio before sending it to a referred user. Look for spelling, grammar, and/or formatting mistakes.
  • Get your Career Portfolio critiqued by a Career Advisor at The Career Center during our Hours of Operation.
