Describe the steps you took to obtain your internship.

I met with my advisor and shared my goals for the future in social media management. It turns out she knew someone in need of a social media and website assistant for their new gym. So, she gave him my information and all of us discussed what was needed of me. Once in contact with the gym owner, I automatically received the internship and started working.

Describe some of your responsibilities or duties during your experiential learning opportunity.

I worked with the website building company to fix and update the gym's website, posted regularly on social media, created graphics, used video editing software, ran social media campaigns, and attended events they had for content.

What was a typical day like "on the job?"

Typically in the morning I would schedule out what needs to be posted such as a particular fitness class or specials happening, and would post 1-2 times that day. I'd physically go to the gym once every other week or so for special events or to help with the website.

What are some major takeaways from your experience? How will these help prepare you for the next step after graduation?

I learned how to reach particular audiences and how Instagram analytics worked. I learned what this certain audience liked and didn't like and applied it to the social media. I also learned that certain things I liked the owner didn't want. So I was able to learn his style and adjust to what he wanted for his business.

Did this experience help clarify your career path? If yes, how so?

Yes it did. It confirmed to me that I truly enjoy marketing and social media as a career. It helped build my confidence as I was worried that I may not be good in the role. I feel much better at going after future endeavors related to social media now.
